Fear and Loathing in Karrnath
Three years ago your characters took part in the battle of Cowpens. Your side (Aundair) was victorious and drove a fell host from Karrnath back across the Flessern(?) River. You heard one of the prisoners had the power of “seeing.” Drail, curious to learn of his mothers past, persuaded the witch to look into the past. She claimed she needed a small blood sacrifice to power the ritual.
Naively, all of you (with the exception of Jurien) and three other friends agreed. In your minds you saw yourselves on a misty field lined with hundreds bodies impaled on stakes. A genasi that looks very much like Drail is being forced to kneel before a huge demonic being. Everyone is overcome but a feeling of utter terror. As if sensing your fear the being turns towards you. The only thing you remember after that are looking into the black fathomless eyes.
When you came to, your three friends were dead, their faces frozen in a silent scream of agony. The witch had also escaped and you were charged with aiding her. Only the word of your commander and present employer saved you from the gallows. Banishment from Aundair is a small price to pay for your lives. Since then you’ve felt guilty for your friends’ fate and you have periodically been haunted by horrific nightmares. You always wake drenched in sweat with a deep sense of foreboding. Your only recollection of your dreams are the terrible eyes and the screams of your dead friends.
At least you have a lucrative job working for the ? as “recovery specialists.” The ? runs the college of wizardry and artificery. They are interested in any and all artifacts and esoteric knowledge to help hold back and defeat the darkness that they see coming. Your function is to help them find and ultimately recover these artifacts and knowledge. The thieve’s guild of ??? runs a similar operation and are your greatest rivals. They are in it simply for the profit. They are also ruthless in their pursuits. To help you do your jobs the colleges gave everyone some rudimentary arcane knowledge. Everyone is trained in arcana and has the ritual caster feat. If you are already trained in arcana you get the skill focus feat in arcana instead.
The battle was between Aundair and Karrnath. You were fighting for Aundair as part of a mercenary company. Your friends were banished from Aundair as a result of “the incident.” Unfortunately, your current assignment brings you back to Aundair.

One last note, a potion of healing looks, tastes, smells, even affects you like 3 ounces of guiness. If you down too many you’ll get drunk. A potion of vitality equal to a shot of bourbon. A potion of recovery is like 3 ounces of a really nice single malt scotch. The alcohol like effects don’t occur until after the encounter ends.
